Auckland is confused, contradictory PART 1

Auckland is confused, contradictory PART 1
We all belong to things – families, schools, clubs, communities, suburbs, towns, cities, regions, countries. While the strength of the connections will vary from individual to individual, they are real and provide us with a sense of belonging and identity.

Aucklanders are currently having a look at where they belong and how this defines them. The Royal Commission has heard public submissions and is now deliberating before reporting back to the Governor-General in December.

Like most of us we have a few opinions about Auckland. They aren’t unique, but take the view that as we all belong here we need to take the good with the bad – a bit like unconditional love. And that we should be more inclined to smell the roses and look at things with rose-tinted glasses, or something.

None of this means we don’t want Auckland to be a ‘better’ place. It just means we want to see some different frames of reference besides the political ones and hear some different voices.
